SPOILER ALERT!

One Night: Promissed

Untitled - Jodi Ellen Malpas

Synopsis:

Livy notices him the moment he walks into the coffee shop. He's heart-stoppingly stunning, with a blue-eyed gaze so piercing she's almost too distracted to take his order. When he walks out the door, she thinks she'll never see him again. Then she finds the note he left on his napkin ...signed M. All he wants is one night to worship her. No feelings, no commitment - nothing but pleasure. Every defense mechanism Livy has adopted during her solitary life is at risk of being obliterated by this confounding man. He's obnoxious but well-mannered. He's a gentleman but aloof. He's passionate but emotionless. Yet the fascination is so powerful, Livy can't deny him...or herself. M awakens something in Livy, something deep and addicting that she never knew existed-and that she fears only he can satisfy. But she senses that behind the fast cars, fancy suits, and posh apartment, he's aching inside. To have him, body and soul, she'll have to brave his dark secrets. Delving into his world and breaking down his defenses becomes her obsession - an obsession that could shatter her heart beyond repair...

So, where can I start? I loved it!

For all future readers, I will try not to give a lot of spoilers and let the book reveal the characters and plot.

First of, this book is nothing like This Man series (spoilers coming) and from what I understood this was the author's intention. The explosive characters and books - This Man - would have been hard to follow.

I found Miller, in the beginning, hard to connect to - so serious, composed, methodical and without feelings, or at least this is what I thought. After Jessie Ward The Lord of the Manor I almost fell in the temptation to compare and expect the same traits. I couldn't be more wrong. Jodi brought to life a different man. She managed to create a new sex god and it worked so well for me: mysterious, composed, seductive presence. Jodi made OCD sexy, if this is possible; she brought a sexy Monk to life without the awkwardness (Monk TV series). His hobby managed to surprise me in a pleasant way and this is the point were I started to understand Miller.

I loved Miller, secrets and all, and I am happy he is not another Jessie or Gideon or Grey.

Olivia, Livy, so different from Ava. Confident, with her own secrets, withdrawn, living a quiet life, no failed relationships (or so it seems).

She managed to resist (for as long as she could) Miller. Rational to a point and aware of her issues. I didn't feel as frustrated with her (as with Ava) because she didn't exhibit a childish behavior. Livy had no career, no ambitions, no life and one friend (gay again) a total opposite from so many book characters (Ava, Eva). The fact that she had a troubled past hinted in the prologue added more depth to her.

I was not very excited with the prologue and I felt it didn't belong to the book because it took the mystery away from Livy and revealed her to fast for me. I would have wanted to be surprised and discover Livy's secrets at same time with Miller.

Great story, great plot. I loved the fact that Livy and Miller didn't get together as fast as expected and there was a lot of rationalization beyond the desire but the sparks were there. Miller seduced me and got my attention as he did with Livy.

The action stagnated a bit for me in the middle but it picked up very fast towards the end. Maybe a bit to fast - all Livy's secrets were revealed slowly leaving Miller with his dark secrets kept well till the end and revealed to fast.

Cassie (the rival) was not as present in the book as I would have expected. Her presence was minimal, hinted almost. She was the spice that would have made the action more interesting.

I hardly wait for November to read book number 2 (One night: Denied) and I almost wish I didn't read the book now. Almost, because I loved the book and because I wonder what else can JEM bring, what other secrets are to be revealed when all seems uncovered.
